Abstract

Thirty years after the archaeological excavation was carried out by the National Cultural Heritage Commission on the Portuguese Governors House in Colonia del Sacramento, this article takes up some of the topics investigated at the time from a retrospective look, collects and summarizes some milestones that show the beginnings of historical archaeology in Uruguay, and reviews the result of the work carried out in the area that was the geopolitical center of the city. The methodology used, the communication and enhancement strategies addressed at the time and the recent ones are mentioned here. The bibliographic review and the results of the new excavations, the enhancement of the structural remains preserved in situ and the exhibition of the archaeological remains recovered there, allow us to visualize how this archaeological intervention, one of the first in historical archaeology in our country , and its value, in the center of a site included under the UNESCO World Heritage Site, constitutes a shaft reference both for the history of the site and for the discipline at the national level.
