primeras aproximaciones a Corpus Christi

Abstract

Archaeological researches about the first Spanish settlements established in the Río de la Plata basin have been focused on SantiSpiritus Fort (1527) and NuestraSeñora de Santa María de BuenAyre (1536). The third occupation was Corpus Christi, which was founded by Juan de Ayolas in 1536, near the Timbues’ lagoon, today known as Coronda Lagoon (Santa Fe, Argentina). Although a huge amount of historic documents mentions Corpus Christi, none of them alludes to its geographic location. Thus, where it is exactly located is still unknown. In this paper, we review historical written sources ofthe 16th century, in order to formulate hypotheses about the working of the settlement, the most likely archaeological record and the location area.
