Abstract

This work presents the results of the first stage of a larger project whose objective is to study and preserve the ruins of a metallurgical facility located in the town of Hilario, (Calingasta Department, San Juan Province, Argentina). This facility was dedicated to the smelting of silver lead to obtain silver and was promoted by Domingo F. Sarmiento during his performance as Governor of the Province of San Juan and President of the Argentine Nation between 1862 and 1874, as part of his policy of development and promotion of mining activity in the country.
